Cambridge English
Level-based English qualifications aligned to the CEFR that do not expire.
Cambridge English Qualifications
Cambridge English is a suite of level-based qualifications, including B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, each aligned to a level of the CEFR. Unlike a single test score, each qualification is tied to a CEFR level and the certificate does not expire.
Three different things are easy to mix up: the exam itself, a preparation course that helps you get ready for it, and an exam centre where you sit it. A school can teach preparation without being an official test centre.
At a glance
Who it is for
Proving English at a specific CEFR level for study, work or personal goals. Some universities accept C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency for admission.
C1 Advanced is not the same as CELTA
C1 Advanced is a proficiency qualification that shows your own level of English. CELTA is a qualification for teaching English to others. The names look similar but they measure very different things, so do not treat one as the other.

Frequently asked questions
Do Cambridge English certificates expire?
The certificates themselves do not expire because they are tied to a CEFR level. Some universities and employers may still prefer a recent result, so check the requirement where you are applying.
Is Cambridge C1 Advanced the same as CELTA?
No. C1 Advanced measures your own English at CEFR level C1. CELTA is an initial qualification for teaching English to others. They are different qualifications despite the similar naming.
