Irish Student Visa Guide
Do You Need a Visa?
EU and EEA citizens do not need a visa to study in Ireland. Non-EU citizens from most countries need a student visa, called a Stamp 2 permission. This allows you to study on an eligible English language course and work part-time.
Types of Permission
The Stamp 2 permission is for language students on courses over 3 months (25 weeks). Whether you need to apply for a visa before travelling depends on your nationality. Some countries are "visa required" and some are "visa free" (you get the stamp on arrival).
Requirements
- Valid passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay)
- Acceptance letter for an eligible English course (on the ILEP or TrustEd Ireland list)
- Proof of funds: minimum €3,000 in your bank account
- Proof of accommodation in Ireland
- Private health insurance
- Return flight or proof of onward travel
How to Apply
Apply online via the AVATS system (avats.inis.gov.ie). You should apply at least 8 weeks before your planned travel date. The fee is €60 for a single entry visa or €100 for a multiple entry visa.
Processing Times
Visa applications typically take 4 to 8 weeks to process. During the peak season (June to August) it can take longer, so apply as early as possible.
Working Rights
On a Stamp 2 visa you can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and up to 40 hours per week in June, July, August and September and from 15 December to 15 January.
You must have a PPS number and be registered with Revenue before you can start working.
Extending Your Visa
Apply to the GNIB/IRP office before your current permission expires. Bring your passport, a letter from your school confirming enrolment, proof of funds, and the €300 registration renewal fee.
