The six CEFR levels
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages describes language ability on six levels. This is what each one means, and what kind of course in Ireland suits it.
- A1: Beginner
- At A1 level, you can understand and use very basic English expressions. You can introduce yourself and answer simple questions about personal details. You are at the very start of your English learning journey. An intensive beginner course in Ireland would help you build a strong foundation quickly.
- A2: Elementary
- At A2 level, you can communicate in simple and routine tasks. You can describe your background, immediate environment, and everyday matters. You will benefit significantly from a structured course focused on building everyday communication skills and expanding your vocabulary.
- B1: Intermediate
- At B1 level, you can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar topics. You can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an English-speaking country. A general English course at this level will help you become more fluent and confident in conversation.
- B2: Upper Intermediate
- At B2 level, you can understand the main ideas of complex texts and interact with a degree of fluency. You can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects. An upper intermediate or exam preparation course in Ireland could help you reach C1 level and significantly improve your career and academic prospects.
- C1: Advanced
- At C1 level, you can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning. You can express yourself fluently without much obvious searching for expressions. A C1 course or business English programme in Ireland would help you achieve near-native precision in professional and academic settings.
- C2: Proficient
- At C2 level, you can understand virtually everything heard or read with ease. You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely. At this level, you may benefit from specialised courses such as teacher training, academic English, or exam preparation for CPE.
