Getting Around Ireland: Public Transport Guide
Leap Card
The Leap Card is a rechargeable travel card that saves up to 31% compared to cash fares. It works on Dublin Bus, Luas tram, DART train and Irish Rail services. Buy one at convenience stores, train stations or online. A Student Leap Card offers additional discounts.
Dublin Transport
Dublin Bus covers all city areas and suburbs. The Luas tram has two lines running north-south (Green Line) and east-west (Red Line). The DART is a coastal train running from Howth in the north to Greystones in the south, a scenic way to travel.
Intercity Travel
Irish Rail connects Dublin to Cork (2h30m), Galway (2h15m), Limerick, Waterford and Sligo. Bus Éireann and GoBus run nationwide coach services and are often cheaper than the train. Book early online for the best fares.
Cycling
Dublin Bikes is a public bike rental scheme in Dublin city centre. Many cities have expanding cycling lane networks. Bikes can be hired from approximately €10 per day from local shops.
Taxis and Ridesharing
Free Now and Uber operate in major Irish cities. Always use licensed taxis. Look for the roof sign and licence number displayed on the vehicle.
